Does Islam allow Slavery?

Question: I am a Captain in the Pakistan army and would like to know if can we have sexual relations with the women we are able to capture in wars? I have heard that in one of the wars during the time of the Prophet (sws), the whole Muslim army raped slave women offered to them provided that they practiced ‘Azal (coitus interruptus).
Answer: Well I am afraid you cannot do so. Since the question you have raised is an important one. I’ll give you a detailed answer:
In my opinion, among many other misconceptions about Islam is the notion that it gives sanction to slavery and permits its followers to enslave prisoners of war, particularly women and establish extra-marital relations with them. Islam, I must strongly affirm, has not the slightest link with slavery and concubinage. On the contrary, it completely forbids these practices. It is quite outrageous to associate such barbarities with a religion revealed to upgrade humanity.
The point which needs to be appreciated and which, perhaps, is the real cause of the misconception is that Islam had adopted a gradual process to abolish the institution of slavery because of the social conditions prevalent in Arabia at that time. It must be kept in mind that slavery was an integral part of the pre-Islamic Arab society. There were scores of slave men and women in almost every house. This was largely due to two reasons: First, during those times, the standard practice of dispensing with prisoners of war was to distribute them among the army who captured them. Second, there were extensive slave markets in Arabia in that period where free as well as men and women of all ages were sold like animals.
In these circumstances, in which slavery had become an essential constituent of the Arab society, Islam adopted a gradual way to eliminate it. An immediate order of prohibition would have created immense social and economic problems. It would have become impossible for the society to cater for the needs of a large army of slaves, who were, otherwise, dependent on various families. Also, the national treasury was in no position to provide them all on a permanent basis. A large number among them were old and incapable of supporting themselves. The only alternative left for them, if they were instantly freed, would have been to turn to beggary and become an economic burden for the society. The question of slave girls and women was even more critical, keeping in view their own low moral standards. Freeing them, all of a sudden, would have only resulted in a tremendous increase in brothels.
Perhaps, the reason behind this gradual eradication can be understood better if one considers the position which interest occupies in the economy of Pakistan today. No one can refute Pakistan’s national economic structure is interest oriented. How the parasite of interest has crippled the national economy is apparent to every keen eye. However, there is no denying the fact that without it our present economic system cannot sustain itself. Every reasonable person will acknowledge that today if a government wishes to rid the economy from this menace then, in spite of its utter prohibition in Islam, it will have to adopt a gradual methodology. During this interim period interest oriented deals will have to be tolerated and temporary laws will have to be enacted to handle them, just as the Qur’an had given certain provisional directives about slaves during the interim period of their gradual eradication. An alternative economic framework will have to be steadily incorporated in place of the existing one. A sudden abolition, without another parallel base, will only hasten the total collapse of the economic system, which, of course, will be disastrous for the country.
To avert a similar disaster and to ward off a similar catastrophe, Islam had adopted a progressive and a gradual scheme, fourteen hundred years ago, to do away with the inhuman institution of slavery. Following are some of the measures it took in this regard:
    1. In the early Makkan period, it pronounced that slave emancipation was a great deed of piety. The very initial Makkan surahs appealed to the Muslims to liberate as many slaves as they could.
    2. The Prophet (sws), unequivocally, directed the Muslims to raise the standard of living of the slaves and bring it equal to their own standard. This, of course, was meant to discourage people from persisting with them.
    3. For the atonement of many sins manumission of slaves was divinely ordained.
    4. All slave men and women who could support themselves in the society were directed to marry one another, in order to raise their moral and social status.
    5. A permanent head in the public treasury was fixed to set free slave men and women.
    6. Prostitution, which was largely carried out through slave women, who were mostly forced by their masters do so, was totally prohibited.
    7. The affronting names of ‘abd (slave-man) and amah (slave-woman) by which slave men and women were called, were abrogated so that people should stop regarding them as slaves. In their place, the words fata (boy) and fatat (girl) were introduced.
    8. Finally, the law of mukatibat provided very easy access for the slaves to the gateway to freedom. Every slave who was capable of supporting himself was allowed by law to free himself, provided that he either gave a certain monetary amount to his master or carried out certain errands for him. After this, he could live as a free man. A special head in the treasury was fixed for this purpose; also, wealthy people were urged to help the slaves in this regard. The net result of this law was that only handicapped and old slaves were left to be provided for by their masters, which not only went in their own favour but also prevented them from becoming an economic burden on the society.
As far as the war you have referred to, let me correct you on your information.
In the battle of Bani Mustaliq, the prisoners captured were either freed in the battlefield as a favour while some others were freed on ransom. The Prophet (sws) brought the remaining prisoners to Madinah and while waiting for their families to procure them, gave them into the temporary custody of his Companions (rta). Since at that time, the prohibition of slavery was passing through the interim period when it was still intact for reasons stated earlier, the Prophet (sws) accepted the right of masters to have sexual intercourse with the slave women as was the international law at that time but set about taking steps that could prevent this from actually happening. Let me explain the most important measure he adopted:
Among the prisoners of this battle was Sayyidah Jawayriyyah as well. Her father arrived with some camels as ransom. The Prophet (sws) inquired about the two well-bred camels he had hid behind. This astounded him so much – for he knew that there could be no way that the Prophet (sws) could have had knowledge of them – that he accepted faith. At this, Sayyidah Jawayriyyah also accepted faith. The Prophet (sws) proposed for her to which her father consented. Upon this, the marriage was solemnized. The result of this marriage was that all the remaining prisoners of war were set free by the Muslim soldiers, since they thought that it was not appropriate to keep the Prophet’s in-laws in captivity.
So actually no such instance of sexual intercourse with the slave women took place. It is totally wrong that they were raped. Also today as far as prisoners of was are concerned, they cannot be taken to be slaves and sexually benefited from. After the abolition of slavery that took place in the time of the Prophet (sws) as described above, no one dare maltreat a p.o.w. let alone sexually harass them.

Muslims killing in Burma (THE REALITY )

From last month’s I am hearing such things that Muslims are killed  in Burma and all the Muslims countries are silent on this issue. But today I read the report and that man want to prove that all the pictures are fake and some of the stories are fake. I think he proved that the picture is fake. The question is are killed or not?
so let me start from the beginning what happened in Burma
From the news and sources we get that Muslim some youngsters rapped a girl of 19 year in Myanmar after this murder the Muslims were released by Police, and Buddhists subsequently went on a rampage and killed 10 Muslim men. After the death of the Muslim Men thousands of Muslims stormed several Buddhist villages and burned down hundreds of homes and killed many Buddhists, the death toll is as yet unknown. Most of the Muslims who live in Myanmar are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, which used to be part of Pakistan. Another news source says” Three suspected culprits who allegedly committed the crimes of rape and
murder in Rambree in Arakan State were reported to be arrested by the
police on the night of 29th May after the local peoples gathered at the local police station and demanded them to reveal and arrest the culprits.
The arrested are identified as Htak Htak (23), Rafique (18) and Luyub (21) from Kyaukhtaran Muslim Village in Rambree Township. Htak
Htak was said to be arrested with the victim’s jewelries in downtown
Rambree first and his two other associates in the crime were also
arrested on the same night from their residences in Kyaukhtaran Village.
“All three culprits are already arrested. People from 11 villages in our
area marched to police station in Kyauknimaw and staged a demonstration
demanding immediate identification and arrest of the culprits. So, the
police immediately identified and arrested the culprits”, said a
resident from Kyauknimaw.
He said nearly 1,000 villagers from eleven nearby villages participated in
the demonstration demanding police action against the culprits who
committed the crime.
“That’s the most heinous crime that may lead to a big problem in our area. The
people are raged with anger and indomitable spirit. Not only the police,
but also district and township administrations had to prevent the
people. Otherwise the crime could spark a very big communal unrest”, he
said.
The source also said the police forces had to save two other Muslim youths
as the angry crowd tried to get rid of them, believing them to be the
offenders of the crime while they were being interrogated on suspicion
of the crime in the residence of Kyauknimaw Villager Administrator, U
Than Tun.
Those three arrestees were said to be sent to Kyaukpru district prison on the
same night they were arrested because of the worrisome situations for
them in Rambree.

Police in Kyauknimaw police station confirmed the arrest of three youths but denied to tell details about the case.

Kyauknimaw
Village is today quiet and its market that used to be crowded is dry
without people. There is no traffic between the nearby villages and
especially no Muslim dares to go out from their homes in the area.
The victim is identified as 26 year old Ma Thidar Htwe from Thapraychaung
Village in Rambree Township. She was said to be raped and killed by
those three Muslim youths on her way back home after working in
Kyauknimaw Village around 5 pm on May 28. According to the
eye-witnesses, her dead body bears a slice at the throat, several stabs
on the chest, and stabs and cuts on the vagina and pubic region.
The victim’s dead body will be cremated in the afternoon on the 30th of May
under the supervision of the local authorities reportedly to avoid any
social unrest in the area.
Reportedly said that Kyaukhtayan village is a place where a number of Bengali
reside, experts on immigration issues view the case that it has a very
high possibility of social conflicts if police and civil administrators
can't control the situation very well. Meanwhile, a Rakhine activist
claims that such cases are likely to be due to weaker control and
corruption of regional police forces on immigration problems. Bengali
immigrants are also called as Rohingyas.
in all over the world the news are under sea now a days and nobody says that is a killing or any violation of human rights. I just cant understand why the media is silent and why the muslim media is not playing the role. Some of the political and religious parties rise there voice on media playing a positive role . but some secular mind peple and the agent of Muslims killer proving that Burma crises is not a big deal.. I am adding some information from deferent articles and news which is under bellow.
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency)
- According to recent News these days, Muslims in Myanmar are in a
disaster situation, thousands have been killed, Tens of houses,
villages, and mosques have been burned and thousands are died because of
bad situation. ABNA has received several news from some Muslims
resisting in the Myanmar that follow in sequence order
June, 3, 2012

A death body of a Buddhist girl was found and she has been raped in
Arakan, Myanmar. A rumor was spreaded that the criminals were Muslims of
Rohingya. So the extremist Buddhists became so angry, and began
attacking Rohingya Muslims, started with killing seven Rohingyas on a
bus. They were in da’wah mission.

A lot of Muslim villages were been burned by the extremist Buddhists.
June, 9, 2012
Pagoda, Maungdaw, Arakan
A group of Myanmarese soldiers, named NASAKA, were shooting –without
any reason– the Rohingya people in several Muslim villages. All of young
Muslims were arrested. The injured people were not allowed to get
helped so they died.
June, 23, 2012
1: Hundreds Muslims were arrested by police and NASAKA brought them to a unknown place, and they just disappeared.
2: Some extremist Buddhists ripped apart al-Quran and peed in a mosque, and the soldiers were just watching.
3: Some Buddhists asked money from Muslims, and if they didn’t get it, they
were taking cattle (like cows and goats) which belong to Muslims.
The source of Muslims’ food there are getting scarce.
4: young Muslims had been beat up and kicked until death, and another
young Muslim had been tortured by Myanmar government soldiers in a
mosque and he had been forced to put his foot on the Quran. After that,
the mosque and all of Qurans which is in had been burned.
June, 24, 2012
Most
of them were shot until die and some of them were buried alive with
their dead friends in a big hole that have been prepared before. This is
government’s agenda to cleansing this ethnic.
June, 26, 2012
In the same day, a village leader’s house had been burned by extremist
Buddhists who were come with guns to kill Muslims. Then, the village
leader was brought to soldier camp.
June, 29, 2012
Soldiers began not allowing Muslims to pray in all mosques.
July, 1, 2012
Government soldiers got into several Muslim villages and attacked them and raped a woman Muslim and beat up their youth.
The soldiers make an announcement that who want back their family who were
been arrested by them, the people must pay 9.000 dollar America per
person.
Some of Muslims who were arrested had been tortured, killed and raped every time.
July, 3, 2012
A Muslim had been killed by extremist Buddhists, on his way to his work
place by cycle. His body had been wear government custom, so that the
Buddhists spread news that a government person had been killed by
Muslims.
The extremist Buddhists had catch some of Muslims and asked money from
their family if they wanted to free that is 200,000 Kyat (Myanmar
currency) (about 225 US dollars) per person. Ones who were not been
taken by their family will brought by the extremist Buddhists to another
place, name Mondu.
July, 4, 2012
Some
of extremist Buddhists attacked 5 government soldiers and 3 Muslims in a
market. The soldiers had been beet seriously and brought to hospital.
The 3 Muslims were just disappeared and there were no news about them.
Another extremist Buddhist group went to a Muslims village and paid to some
government soldiers to cover them. In that village, they killed the men
and raped 200 women until death.
Governmentsoldier make an announcement that Muslims in all over Muslims area,
(Arakan) can not make and arrange any majlis. They were also not allowed
go out from their houses.
Unfortunately the extremist Buddhists can go to any Muslim's house and raped the Muslim woman anytime they want.
July, 5, 2012
Mohammad Aziz’s (our source of this news) father had been captured by police –
ketika sedang berdakwah - without any reason and until now there was no
news about him.
July, 6, 2012
In a village, police and soldiers beat up so brutally.
July, 7, 2012
Village Asyikka Fra, Mondow –The extremist Buddhists who wear police and army
uniform asked from the village leader to brought to them 100 Muslims.
So when they had the 100 Muslims, they cut 2 people hand, shot some of
them until death and ask the balance to leave their country with boats.
Almost all the boats had been drowned. The Muslims died including some
children and women.
Latest major calculation of facts in 2 recent months:
1) 22 mosques had been burned by the extremist Buddhists which their ethnic is Rakhine, and they were helped by Myanmar’s soldiers.
2) Thousands al-Quran had been burned, step on and peed on.
3) 2 Muslims’ schools had been burned by the extremist Buddhists.
4) 20,000 Muslims Rohingya had been killed. (in some other news there are 52,000 killed Muslims in recent two months)
5) 5,000 Muslims Rohingya immigrated to save their religion and life. Some of them were forced to immigrate.
6) 30,000 Muslims Rohingya were disappeared without any news.
7) 5,000 Muslim Women had been raped.
8) 17 Muslims’ villages had been burned
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Government Official said about 71 people had died in more than a week of clashes, in addition to 10 Muslims killed on June 3 by a Buddhist mob.Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing said the last reported deaths occurred Tuesday in Yathetaung township, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of the Rakhine state capital Sittwe, when clashes took 12 lives. Win Myaing says security forces restored calm there Wednesday.
Thousands of muslims homes have been burned down, and tens of thousands muslims displaced.Resentment between the communities is long-standing.
Many Rakhines consider the Muslim Rohingyas to be illegal settlers from neighboring Bangladesh.Myanmar officials and many Burmese, including the mostly Buddhist ethnic Rakhine, consider the Rohingya to be illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh, and refer to them as “Bengalis”.The dead bodies of eight more ethnic Rakhine were found in the village of Yathedaung, about 65 kilometres from the state capital Sittwe, the official said. “These people were killed during clashes with Bengalis,” he told from Sittwe.About 800,000 Rohingya live in Myanmar, according to the United Nations, which describes them as one of the world’s most persecuted minorities.Bangladesh, where an estimated 300,000 Rohingya live, has been turning back Rohingya boats arriving on its shores since the outbreak of the unrest. Rohingya leaders say the real number of dead could be much higher than the figures given by authorities.

I search all these news and information from the following links and you can search by your own. From all of the above this is clear that Muslims are in killing era in Myanmar. The Buddhist are killing Muslims with the help of security forces. Muslims have no way to go Bangladesh and all the countries bordered to Burma are not accepting them as refugees. No food for them no shelter no place to hide so  it makes the killing easy for security and Buddhist. They didn’t allow any media to Burma that’s why there was a lack of information and the western media always shows that Muslims are terrorist but here I can’t understand why all the Muslim media is silent. In Pakistan some of the people are really out of sense they are going to prove that the killing over there is in small scale and we don’t need to pay attention   towards Burma Muslim. The media played a very shameful role in Burma crises. Especially Pakistani media. Thousands Muslims are killed over there and thousands of houses and villages are burnt. But the human rights and the so called united nation are busy in their own money making and making environment for America to attack on another Islamic countries. They will raise voice to make an environment for America. We need to be united plz I request all of Muslims plz be united and think what’s going on with Muslims in all over in the world.
thanks

Child Labor: A Horrendous Social Evil - Essay

Child labor is a serious blot on our efforts to project India as a dynamic country on the move. According to International Labor Organization (ILO) statistics, India has perhaps the largest child labor force in the world, which is around 16.5 million. Unofficially however the estimate is around 45 million of which around 20 percent are in urban areas and the rest in rural areas.
In a country where much of the people live below the poverty line, it is simply not easy to eliminate this social problem. The root of child labor is always poverty and to some extent ignorance. But it is a stark truth that without getting into an employment these child labors would starve to death. Their parents cannot afford to feed them on their own and these little, children are simply forced to work. To acquire this basic necessity of life, the family forgets all their sense of morality and sends their children to work in factories and small scale industries. These children, deprived of the precious memories of childhood, grow up into ignorant adults with hardly any type of intellectual gain.
In the past, measures taken by the developed world against the developing countries to check this social evil hardly had any impact because the developing countries simply did not bother. The problem continued to grow. The fact that this social evil is inextricably intertwined with other common problems such as poverty, female literacy etc. make it a vicious circle. To eradicate this social evil was laws were made and a national body was set up against child exploitation. However, the situation worsened. Article 24 of the Indian constitution dealing with fundamental rights says ‘No child below the age of 18 years shall be employed to work in any factory or mine or be engaged in any hazardous employment’. But this provision also remains ideal. The problem of child labor has also started affecting Indian economy. It is likely to threaten Indian exports. Germany put pressure on India to stop export of products made by children. United States also banned Indian exports of products involving child labor. International labor Rights Funds also accused and threatened India that if Indian Carpet Industry did not adopt Rugmark label, that guaranteed that no child labor was used, they have to Indian into line with a boycott like what was organizes by the child Labor coalition against Bangladesh.
It was then the country decided to take a hard and serious look into the issue. But to their dismay, the government found that bringing in adequate legislative measures to curb child labor is easy, but implementing them is another matter altogether. Education and economic prosperity are the only solution to fight against this problem. The problem facing the implementation policy is defining what exactly a hazardous job is and which kinds of jobs actually exploit children. With modernization and globalization of the economy, the working conditions have considerably improved, so the jobs which were considered hazardous yesterday are not at all hazardous today. Secondly, children are exploited due to many advantages. They are very cheap. Child laborers are often paid Rs. 3 per day when an adult takes the minimum wages of Rs. 1,400 per month as per law. Children never fight for their rights. They are meek and easily submissive.
At many places child labor has consumed a sinister form. In Mumbai and Goa sex with children is available as ‘Pleasure-packages’. It is estimated that 20 percent of the one lakh prostitutes in Mumbai alone are below 18 years of age. In Tamil Nadu Children are employed in the highly hazardous small scale match and firework factories. Around 30 lakh children work in the Saree industry in Varanasi. More than 10 lakh children work in brick-pits stone guarries o the banks of the Ganges. The carpet belt of India employ about 1.5 lakh and hundreds of children work in bidi-rolling factories in Tamil Nadu and so on.
The tough step taken by European governments against import of goods whose manufacture involve child labor has forced the authorities to take some concrete steps to eradicate child labor. Serious measures are being taken such as providing education for children is made a topmost priority and punishment is ensured through legal means to those who violate the child labor Act. Special attention should be drown towards the plight of bonded child laborers who are worse than the free child laborers and such policies should be discouraged in which allowing non-formal education for two hours or so and then sending the children to work. Full use of mass communication such as Doordarshan, press, Akashwani etc. should be made.
However, the task of eradicating child labor is not an impossible one because European and the other developed countries have eradicated this evil. The first and foremost task is to create awareness about the magnitude of the problem and this can be achieved through economic liberalization.
The Supreme Court in its historic judgment, given on 10th December, 1996, ordered the employers to pay Rs.20 thousand to each child-laborer due to the disobeyance of child-labor law. In its 36 page judgment the court clearly started that an adult from the family of every child-laborer will be given a job so that parents will not be compelled to send their child to work. These measures should be started immediately and children working in hazardous condition should be given priority.

Essay on Science and Technology in India

The vital role of science in modern life is not overstated in view of today's world. Science and technology have profoundly influenced the course of human civilization. Science has provided us remarkable insights into the world we live in. The scientific revolutions of the 20th century have led to many technologies, which promise to herald wholly new eras in many fields, As we stand today at the beginning of a new century, we have to ensure fullest use of these developments for the well being of our people. Science and technology have been an integral part of Indian civilisation and culture over the past several millennia. Few are aware that India was the fountainhead of important foundational scientific developments and approaches. These cover many great scientific discoveries and technological achievements in Mathematics, Astronomy, Architecture, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Medicine, Natural Philosophy and other areas. A great deal of this traveled outwards from India. Equally, India also assimilated scientific ideas and techniques from elsewhere, with open-mindedness and a rational attitude, characteristic of a scientific ethos. India's traditions have been founded on the principles of universal harmony, respect for all creations and an integrated holistic approach. This background is likely to provide valuable insights for future scientific advances. During the century prior to independence, there was an awakening of modem science in India through the efforts of a number of outstanding scientists. They were responsible for great scientific advances of the highest international caliber.
Apart from the vast changes it has brought about, the development of a scientific temper in the people is considered important. In the planned economy of a country, science must necessarily play an especially important role. Improvements in techniques evolved as a result of scientific research brings about great increases in production in the different sectors of the economy. National resources are augmented by the substitution of cheap and abundant materials for those in scarce supplies and by finding uses for materials, which have remained un-utilized, prior to independence, very little attention was given to the problem of scientific and industrial research in India. A number of universities and institutes carried out research, mostly on fundamental aspects of science. Certain industries also had their own research organizations. However, industry depended, by and large, on foreign techniques and did not develop research programmes of its own.
A large number of products that had been imported into the country had to be manufactured to meet both civilian and military needs. Indian substitutes had to be found for imported materials and processes had to be developed which would use these materials in place of imported ones. In these circumstances, the Government of India constituted die Board of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1940. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research was formed in 1942. Since independence there has been a greater emphasis on the provision of additional facilities for the promotion of scientific and industrial research. The most significant development in this sphere has been the establishment of a chain of national laboratories and research institutes in different parts of the country. The establishment of national laboratories and research institutes has a special importance in a country like India where medium and small-scale producers contribute a considerable proportion of industrial production. These industries cannot afford to have research facilities of their own, as the larger producers can. Besides these laboratories and research institutes, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has made contributions towards the promotion of fundamental and applied research at a number of institutions and universities.
In the half century since independence, India has been committed to the task of promoting the spread of science. The key role of technology as an important element of national development is also well recognized. The Scientific Policy Resolution of 1958 and the Technology Policy Statement of 1983 enunciated the principles on which die growth of science and technology in India has been based over the past several decades. These policies have emphasized self-reliance, as also sustainable and equitable development. Successes in agriculture, health care, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, nuclear energy, astronomy and astrophysics, space technology and applications, defence research, biotechnology, electronics, information technology and oceanography are widely acknowledged. Major national achievements include very significant increase in food production, eradication or control of several diseases and increased life expectancy of our citizens. While these developments have been highly satisfying, one is also aware of die dramatic changes that have taken place, and continue to do so, in die practice of science, in technology development, and their relationships with, and impact on die society.
Particularly striking is die rapidity with which science and technology is moving ahead. Science is becoming increasingly inter-and multi-disciplinary, and calls for multi-institutional and, in several cases, multi-country participation. Major experimental facilities, even in several areas of basic research, require very large amount of materials, human and intellectual resources. Science and technology have become so closely intertwined, and so reinforce each other that, to be effective, any policy needs to view them together. The continuing revolutions in die field of information and communication technology have had profound impact on the manner and speed with which scientific information becomes available, and scientific interactions take place.
Science and technology have had unprecedented impact on economic growth and social development. Knowledge has become a source of economic might and power. This has led to increased restrictions on sharing of knowledge, to new norms of intellectual property rights, and to global trade and technology control regimes. Scientific and technological developments today also have deep ethical, legal and social implications. There are deep concerns in society about these. The ongoing globalization and the intensely competitive environment have a significant impact on the production and service sectors.
Because of all this, our science and technology system has to be infused with new vitality if it is to play a decisive and beneficial role hi advancing the well being of all sections of our society. The nation continues to be firm in its resolve to support science and technology in all its facets. It recognizes its central role in raising the quality of life of the people of the country, particularly of the disadvantaged sections of society, in creating wealth for all, in making India globally competitive, in utilizing natural resources in a sustainable manner, in protecting die environment, and ensuring national security.
India has the third largest scientific and technical manpower in the world; 162 universities award 4,000 doctorates and 35,000 post-graduate degrees and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research runs 40 research laboratories that have made some significant achievements.
In the field of missile launch technology, India is among the five top nations of the world. Science and Technology, however, is used as an effective instrument of growth and change. It is being brought into the mainstream of economic planning in the sectors of agriculture, industry and services. The country's resources are used to derive the maximum output for the benefit of society and improvement in the quality of life. About 85 per cent of the funds for science and technology come directly or indirectly from the Government. The science and technology infrastructure in the country accounts for more than one per cent of the GNP. Science and technology in India is entering a new frontier.
The prime objective of India's nuclear energy programme is the development and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes such as power generation, applications in agriculture, medicine, industry, research and other areas. India is today recognized as one of the countries most advanced in nuclear technology including production of source materials. The country is self-reliant and has mastered the expertise covering the complete nuclear cycle-from exploration and mining to power generation and waste management. Accelerators and research and power reactors are now designed and built indigenously. The sophisticated variable energy cyclotron at Kolkata and a medium energy heavy ion accelerator 'pelletron' set up recently at Mumbai are national research facilities in the frontier areas of the science.
As part of its programme for peaceful uses of atomic energy, India has also embarked on a program of nuclear power generation. Currently eight nuclear stations are producing 8 billion kilowatts of electricity. Four more nuclear power stations have been planned. The new nuclear reactors have been completely designed in India. The peaceful nuclear programme also includes producing radio-isotopes for use in agriculture, medicine, industry and research.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), under the Department of Space (DOS), is responsible for research, development and operation in space systems in the areas of satellite communications, remote sensing for resource survey, environmental monitoring, meteorological services etc. DOS is also the nodal agency for the Physical Research Laboratoty which conducts research in the areas of space science, and the National Remote Sensing Agency which deploys modern remote sensing techniques for natural resource surveys and provides operational services to user agencies. India is the only third world country to develop its own remote sensing satellite. India joined a select group of six nations on October 15,1994, when the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) successfully .accomplished its mission of placing the 800-kg remote sensing satellite, IRS-P2, in the intended orbit.
The INSAT series of satellites launched earlier are performing well and provide vital services for telecommunications, television, meteorology, disaster warning and distress detection. The latest INSAT series will include new features like Kit-band transponders and mobile satellite service, transponders. The remote-sensing satellites, launched in 1988 and 1991, have already become the mainstays of the natural resource management system of the country. The projected launch of advanced remote sensing satellite will not only enhance the scope of their application, but will also offer commercial service to other countries.
The most significant milestone of the Indian Space Programme during the year 2005-06 was the successful launch of PSLV-C6. On may 5,2006, the ninth flight of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C6) from Satish Dhawan Space centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota successfully placed two satellites-1560 kg CARTOSTAR-1 and 42 kg HAMSAT-into a predetermined polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). The successful launch of INSAT-4A, the heaviest and most powerful Satellite built by India so far, on 22 December 2005 was the other major event of the year 2005-06. INSAT-4A is capable of providing Direct-To-Home (DTH) television broadcasting services.
The Indian space programme entered a new era when ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch vehicle (PSLV)-C7 successfully launched on January 10,2007 four satellites into high polar orbit from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota. The four satellites put into orbit were India's CARTUSAT-2 and space Capsule Recovery Experiment. (SRE-1), Indonesia's LAPAN-TUBSAT and Argentina's PEHUENSAT-1.
The Indian achievement in the application of space-based remote sensing technology has led a US company to enter into an agreement for marketing the data from Indian satellites globally.
India's progress in space technology has attracted worldwide attention and demand, with leasing agreements for marketing of IRS data and supply of space hardware and services. India also believes in co-operation in space with agencies all over the world. A high-level UN team selected India for setting up a UN Centre for Space Science and Technology Education. India is on the threshold of achieving self-reliance in the launch capability. It will be a befitting tribute to the father of the Indian space program, Dr. Vikararn Sarabhai, whose 90th birth anniversary was observed in August 2006.
India has been the forerunner among the developing countries in promoting multi-disciplinary activities in the field of biotechnology, recognizing the practically unlimited possibility of their applications in increasing agricultural and industrial production, and in improving human and animal life. The nucleus of research in this area is the National Biotechnology Board, constituted in 1982. A Department of Biotechnology was created in 1986.
Recently, the Biotechnology Consortium India Limited was set up. It will play the role of catalyst in bridging the gap between Research and Development, Industrial and Financial Institutions. Some of the new initiatives taken include developing techniques for gene mapping, conservation of biodiversity and bioindicators' research, special biotechnology programs for the benefit of die scheduled castes and scheduled tribes and activities in the area of plantation oops. The areas, which have been receiving attention, are cattle herd improvement through embryo transfer technology, in vitro propagation of disease resistant plant varieties for obtaining higher yields, and development of vaccines for various diseases. Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) was established in 1942, and is today the premier institution for scientific and industrial research. It has a network of 40 laboratories, two co-operative industrial research institutions and more than 100 extension and field centres. The Council's research programs are directed towards effective utilization of the country's natural resources and development of new processes and products for economic progress. It is now playing a leading role in the fulfillment of the technology missions evolved by the Government.
Thus, we see that India has made unprecedented development in the field of scientific research and technology during the post-independence period and this just seems to be the beginning of a road with endless possibilities. All we need is to plan and organize
in a way so as to be able to harness our intelligentsia in the right direction and provide it with the right opportunities.

Ryan Tannehill's wife Lauren Ufer

The most intriguing player on the 2012 NFL Draft Board is without question Ryan Tannehill. Projections range from him being a late first round pick, to some as insane as calling him the #3 overall. For a young kid with an up and down college career, it must be a scary and exciting prospect, with very little certainty in the next few days and weeks. Lucky for Tannehill, he's got one constant at home who will help keep things sane for him.

Lauren Ufer blew up the internet for a few minutes on Thanksgiving night when ESPN introduced her to the world. During a 27-25 loss to Texas, the ESPN broadcast showed Ufer in the crowd, while also putting up a name underneath so everyone could go searching for more pictures. Ufer and Tannehill were engaged in May of 2011 after meeting in 2009. Thanks to both their engagement notice and their Bed, Bath and Beyond gift registry, we now know they were married January 13, 2012 in a destination wedding in Mexico. Fortunately for the couple, the destination wedding had little impact on their registry as it really looks like they cleaned up with very few items left unfulfilled.

Much like Ryan, Lauren went to Texas A&M, graduating in 2010, majoring in Communications and minoring in Psychology. While those two courses of study may not always lead to the easiest careers, Lauren appeared to do well, landing on her feet as a cardiology assistant at a local cardiovascular clinic. Lauren is also an aspiring model who has done a few photograph campaigns as well as having a model card on Page.713, a modeling and talent agency.
